Why Does Signal Need Google Play Services for Some Features?
On Android, certain background tasks like waking up your phone to deliver a new message notification when Signal isn't actively open require a system level service to work efficiently. Google Play Services provides this through Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), which is the standard mechanism most Android apps use to receive push notifications without constantly running in the background and draining your battery. Without it, Signal has to rely on less efficient methods to check for new messages, which can mean delayed notifications or increased battery use.
Make sure Google Play services is up to date.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app.
- Tap your profile picture > All services.
- Under "Privacy & Security," tap System services > Google Play services.
- Tap Update or Install.
Clear cache & data from Google Play services.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps > Google Play services.
- If "Google Play services isn't there," tap See all apps > Google Play services.
- Tap Storage & cache > Clear cache.
- Tap Clear storage > Clear all data > Delete.
Clear the cache & data of the Play Store.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps & notifications > See all apps.
- Scroll down and tap Google Play Store.
- Tap Storage > Clear Cache.
- Tap Clear data.
- Re-open the Play Store, and try your download again.
