Leave a group

  1. Any member can choose to leave the group.
  2. Admins are a feature of a New Group. A group admin can remove another member or create new admins. An admin may need to assign a new admin before they can leave the group.

Android

Signal Android users have three group types. Follow instructions for your group type:

Signal New Group

  • Only Admins can remove other members.
  • Any member can choose to leave the group.
  1. Open the group chat and tap the group name.
  2. View the group member list and confirm Admin is indicated next to You. Non-admins can not remove members.
  3. If you are an admin, tap on the member name. 
  4. Scroll to select Remove from group and select Remove.
  5. You can choose Leave group to remove yourself from the group.

Signal Legacy Group

Once a member is added only they can choose to leave the group.

  1. View the group chat on your phone.
  2. Tap the group name or header to view chat settings.
  3. Choose Leave group.
  4. Select Yes to confirm leaving the group.

Insecure MMS Group

  • Leaving groups is not supported.
  • Adding members is not supported.
  • This is a limitation set by MMS technology and will happen with any app you are using.
  • Ask a member of that group to create a new MMS group without you and/or with other new individuals.

 

iOS

Signal iOS users have two group types. Follow instructions for your group type:

New Group

  1. Open the group chat and tap the group name.
  2. View the group member list and confirm Admin is indicated next to You. Non-admins can not remove members.
  3. If you are an admin, tap on the member name. 
  4. Scroll to select Remove From Group and select Remove.
  5. You can choose Leave group to remove yourself from the group.

Legacy Group

  1. View the group chat on your phone.
  2. Tap the group name or header to view chat settings.
  3. Choose leavegroup.png Leave Group.
  4. Tap Leave to confirm leaving the group.

Desktop

Signal Desktop users have two group types. Follow instructions for your group type

New Group

  1. Open the group chat and go to chat settings > Group settings
  2. View the group member list and confirm Admin is indicated next to You. Non-admins can not remove members.
  3. If you are an admin, select a member name. 
  4. Select Remove From Group.
  5. You can choose Leave group to remove yourself from the group.
